As officers arrived at the Main Street location, the owner of The Board Shop told police he had seen a man jumping from the roof into the patio area of LaSalles. Dewalt's image was captured by the bar's surveillance camera, which helped identify him later.
Madden said it was more difficult for officers to try to find Dewalt after he left LaSalles because there were so many vehicles and pedestrians downtown at the time.
Police suspected the man had injured himself escaping from the jewelry store because they found blood at the break-in site and on the rooftop.
Dewalt escaped the incident, but two hours later, at 10:35 p.m., a manager working after hours at Boards on Nord, at 641 Nord Ave., called police to report what sounded like two people in the air
