WASHINGTONIt was already believed to be the earliest transition meeting between outgoing and incoming U.S. presidents in history, but apparently still not early enough for Barack and Michelle Obama.
The Obamas arrived 11 minutes early yesterday to take a look at their new home, a nifty little 132-room, 35-bathroom number in downtown Washington.
With George and Laura Bush greeting them at the White House South Portico, America's new first couple seemed relaxed, with president 44 twice reaching over to put his hand on the shoulder of president 43, and Michelle Obama and Laura Bush appearing to share a joke about the colours of their outfits as they posed for the camera.
The two-hour meeting was private, but the pictures have never before portrayed such generational or racial change.
Bush is leaving office with historic lows in popularity, Obama is coming to power with unprecedented expectations, the blue ties the two men chose for the occasion the only thing they appeared to have in common yesterday.
The photo-ops and the generous words shared by both men have been nothing short of gracious and respectful so far without the churlish moves by the Bill Clinton team, which stripped the Ws from White House computer keyboards before Bush took over
